Although Peru has fewer than 1000 people, we include it because it is
exceptional in a couple of ways: It’s the home of Peru State College, the
oldest state college in Nebraska (and one of the first three colleges
established west of the Missouri). The college is listed in The Hundred Best
Colleges for the Average Student because the small class size and dedicated
faculty enable the student who was “average” in High School to shine in
College.
Nestled in among the oak-covered hills and creeks along
the bluffs above the Missouri River, Peru’s tree-lined streets, sleepy
downtown, and quaint college atmosphere make it a perfect hometown for
retirement or for families that want to enjoy the country. It’s also home to
a trailhead on the Steamboat Trace Hiking-Biking trail. And as the photo
shows, it isn’t just for hiking and biking.
